Rescue Dog Spotlight: Tanner from Mutts Matter Rescue

I recently had the opportunity to meet up with Tanner's foster Mom and take some much needed update photos of him! Scroll through the slideshow gallery and read his story below.

Tanner is a young Spaniel mix who was rescued from a shelter in the Washington D.C. area. His foster Mom thinks he looks like a miniature Retriever though! He is a striking reddish- tan color, and his coat is soft and almost silky. He is the perfect little dog, athletic, playful and weighing under 20 lbs.

The shelter reached out to us to help Tanner who was absolutely terrified in the shelter environment. Tanner had arrived there as a stray, and no one ever came looking for him. In the shelter, he would shake with fear and could not trust the people around him. Luckily Tanner was able to get out of there and has been in a wonderful foster home where he is really blossoming and finally getting to be the dog he was meant to be.

Before coming into rescue, Tanner was let down by everyone in his short life. It is no wonder that sweet Tanner was slow to warm up. He is now feeling safe and happy in his foster home, and doing quite well. He plays non-stop with his foster siblings: a peek and a maltipoo. Tanner loves to play chase and loves the company of other small dogs. He has been around bigger dogs but wasn’t too sure and did not warm up to them. We feel that Tanner’s forever family should also include another dog in the home to show him the ropes, and to keep him happy. During the day when his foster parents are at work, he is gated off along with his foster siblings (he has never been crated.) At night he will sometimes join his foster Momma in bed. Tanner has become very attached to her. He will make a very special companion for a lucky person.

MMR is seeking a home for Tanner with older, respectful children who understand and respect his personal space (no toddlers or babies). Anyone who is around Tanner must be aware that it may take him a few days to warm up, and that he will need understanding and some "space" when he is integrated into his new home. If he is given the time and understanding he needs, it will be rewarded with a lifetime of snuggles and kisses......he really is a nice, easy dog to live with once he gets to know everyone. He is not a barker, but will definitely alert when he see's a stranger or something out of place in his environment. Tanner has learned how to walk on a leash and has good house manners. Leash walks will still be a necessary part of his socialization, but he would do best in a fenced in yard, which would be perfect for quick potty breaks, and time with his family in a safe and secure area. Tanner loves to play off leash in his foster home’s fenced yard.

Tanner’s ideal forever home will have a person (or family) who will continue to help him build his confidence and trust that his people will not let him down, again. If you feel you have room in your heart for Tanner, please apply for this special little dog. He is wonderful, and is looking for his forever home now!
